Biography
I was raised in a working-class family in Leeds, England, and became the first in my family to attend university. As a mature student, I relocated to London to pursue a degree in East Asian languages at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies). My studies took me to China (Beijing Normal University), Taiwan (Donghai University, Taichung), and South Korea (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul), where I immersed myself in the languages and cultures of these regions.
I also hold an MA, during which I completed a semester at Imperial College London. There, I took an ambitious course titled "History and Philosophy of Western Science, Technology, and Medicine," which covered intellectual developments from 6th-century BC Greek thought to key scientific milestones of the mid-20th century. This remains one of my ongoing areas of academic interest—when time permits!
Before, during, and after my university years, I explored a wide range of jobs, from driver, barman and window cleaner to civil servant, freelance Chinese translator, and even landscape gardener. Ultimately, I found my calling in English language teaching. In 2023, after 17 years teaching a variety of English courses at two South Korean universities, I joined WKU. Here, I continue to refine my teaching skills and foster my passion for education.
Outside of academia, I enjoy staying physically active. My hobbies include cycling, motor biking, paragliding, martial arts, foreign language study, and playing pool.
